Pioneering Sustainable Fashion with Bioplastics
Mo.Na. Gems is at the forefront of innovation, creating bioplastic materials made from potatoes. As one of the first to design eco-friendly accessories without using traditional materials like wood, seashells, or cotton, Mo.Na. Gems sets a new standard in sustainable fashion.
The name "Mo.Na." stands for Mother Nature, reflecting a deep commitment to the environment. Inspired by the periodic table, Mo.Na. represents the perfect blend of design, art, and science.
Founded by Mecca McDonald and Mia Dunn, Mo.Na. Gems was born out of a college dorm kitchen. After being inspired by resin jewelry online, Mecca and Mia spent the summer before their junior year experimenting with eco-friendly "plastic" formulas. Their hard work paid off when they discovered a starch-based, compostable bioplastic, which they used to create unique jewelry pieces. They began selling their creations within their local community, quickly gaining popularity.
Following their college graduation, Mecca and Mia relocated to NYC to continue growing Mo.Na. Gems. Their mission is to encourage the fashion industry to adopt more eco-friendly practices while maintaining a modern, cute, and fun aesthetic. Through their innovative accessories, Mecca and Mia strive to honor Mother Nature, reminding us all of the importance of treating the Earth with respect and finding ways to give back to the planet.
